In Memory of September 11th
As we commemorate the 9th anniversary of one of the most tragic events in American history, I urge everyone in our California State University, Fresno community to take a moment to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Our Fresno State family lost two alumni – Vincent Tolbert, who died in the Pentagon, and Todd Beamer, one of the passengers on Flight 93 who forced hijackers to crash the plane in Pennsylvania and prevented it from reaching Washington, D.C.
We honor the lives and memories of Navy Lt. Cmdr. Tolbert and Mr. Beamer and everyone lost on that tragic day. The passage of time does not dull the meaning of their sacrifice. I am reminded of Lt. Tolbert and Mr. Beamer when I walk through the Peace Garden and see the two Canary Island pine trees planted as a lasting memorial to them.
As we honor so many sacrifices nine years ago, there is a disturbing increase in misunderstanding of, and hostility toward, religious and cultural differences. Tolerance is a foundational trait of our nation, and one to which we must rededicate ourselves.
In remembrance of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, I have directed that the flags at Fresno State fly at half-staff on the anniversary. In addition, our campus Carillon will play patriotic songs at 8 a.m., noon and 5 p.m.
