Distinguished Mexican politician and a founder of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) of Mexico, was governor of Michoacan state (1980-86) and the first elected mayor of Mexico City (1997-99). He is currently in residence at the Center for Latin American Studies at UC, Berkeley.
